CASA holds 1st MMCA Press Conference

It’s not all about beauty but brains also.

The Communication Arts Students’ Association (CASA) organized the first Mr. and Ms. Communication Arts Press Conference held at Thomas Aquinas Research Center (TARC) Auditorium on September 8, 6:00 pm.

The press conference was initiated to test the intelligence of each contestant on various issues and different hard-hitting questions asked by Rogelio Mariano, Jr. CASA President, Arvin Ace Ritualo, The Chronicle Editor-in-Chief and Shekinah Gapuz, Journalism Society President. “The press conference is one clear manifestation how the CASA Officers -- both the staff, the guilds and the Executive Board, are really working together to give CASANs more competent projects,” Mariano said in an interview. Few Chroniclers and the audience also got a chance to inquire them.

Candidates were graded by judges according to personality, 6, intelligence, 5, eloquence in chosen language, 5, presentation, 2 and audience impact, 2.

“They are really good. The questions thrown to them weren't really that easy to answer. But they never lost their character. As this pageant goes on, we become more and more aware of their true colors,” this according to Mariano.

Crispulo Acuna, Theology Professor, commented, “They gave their intelligent answers to the questions and they were given freedom to think.”

“They are prepared. Most of their question were answered professionally,” said Gilbert Simbulan, sophomore.

Keisha Ferraris, MMCA 2010 candidate told The Chronicle, “Upon hearing their answers, I can see who are outspoken and profound. What they said reflected who they were not only as a CASAn, but as a person.”

19 candidates made it to the press conference, only Andrew John Apostol, 2CA5, missed the event.

“…To the MMCA candidates, job well done… Be Big, Be Bold, and Be Brave…,” said Ritualo as he ends the program.

The MMCA 2011 Press Conference was headed by CASA Vice-President Internal Josephine Marie Domingo and CASA Public Relations Officer Maria Concepcion Reyes. The search for the Mr. and Ms. Communication Arts Pageant started last year with Mariano as its first project head.

Blast Off! CASA GA 2011 Ipinagdiwang!

Agosto 20, 1:00 p.m.
Ika nga, ‘the biggest mountain started as the smallest rock’.

Mediartrix and Artistang Artlets joined forces for "disKURSO#7"

"disKURSO# 7," a seminar organized by Mediartrix, a university-wide multi-media organization of and for art enthusiasts of the University of Santo Tomas, with the helping hand of the Artistang Artlets and CASA was held at the Tan Yan Kee Student Center auditorium last July 13.

The four-hour seminar featured talks from Mr. Thomas Daquioag and Ms. Mannet Villariba, both Thomasian alumni from the College of Fine Arts and Design and Faculty of Arts and Letters, respectively. One of their objectives was to prove that art should not be seen as contained in a box, instead they wanted to emphasize that there is more to be taken from art.  The main goal of the seminar was to bring performance arts to students that will lead to a better understanding and appreciation through experience.

There were also performances made by TAMA Core to give the seminar more liveliness and to rise the artistic atmosphere within.

The said seminar was attended by Artistang Artlets apprentices, a class from Journalism and Political Science and two sections from fourth year Communication Arts students.

Frolic and CASA GA Postponed!

Rogelio Mariano Jr, President of the Communication Arts Students’ Association (CASA) announced two Saturdays ago, July 16, 2011,  on the CASA Guild heads Page that the CASA General Assembly was postponed until further notice. Frolic the CASA Freshmen Amazing Race was postponed later that day also.
The CASA General Assembly and Freshmen Amazing Race were supposed to take place last Tuesday, July 19, 2011. The CASA Executive Board decided to postpone both events due to the unmovable quiz schedule of some freshmen and pilot episodes for TV Production class of some guild heads.
According to the official statement of the Executive board sent by Maria Concepcion Reyes, P.R.O of CASA, all papers were signed and duly accomplished before the postponement. She concluded by saying the CASA EB deemed that it is necessary to postpone the Frolic and GA as we prioritize the academic requirements of students involved.

CCTV

ST. RAYMUND’S BLDG, AB, UST, MANILA, PH- Recently, Artlets had a peculiar eye for looking at the ceilings of their classrooms for the past few weeks.  The administration of the Faculty of Arts and Letters along with its collaborators, have installed Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems on every classroom of the said college; reasons for the said installments are still unclear, but the installation of the CCTVs was meant to “provide ‘security and assurance’” for the well-being of students’ academic lives.
Mixed reactions are aired out by students in every single social networking site like Facebook and Twitter; some are negative while others see the uncanny change as something good, majority of the sentiments though favor the former.
Quite frankly, some students are downright appalled for the installment of these CCTVs; saying that the need for the administration is not only to provide security for students but also to discipline and improve the facilities needed by the students for academic purposes.  "Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial.  If they're thinking for the betterment of AB rooms naman, sana inuna muna yung chairs, aircons, windows, paint job etc.  If hindi natin ma-maintain yung mga malilit na bagay, how much more yung mga CCTV's sa bawat classroom?   Matthews Jubilado, a student of 2CA4 implies. These recording devices violate the very atmosphere of student life, for one cannot observe the every movement of students’ every day lives inside the classroom without interfering with the academic activity of the students themselves.  How can one improve in his academic engagements if the facilities are insufficient and unsatisfactory? One of the school’s obligation is the safety of the students but it should not be limited only to that. Some say that the money used to purchase such equipment would have been better off if some of the major problems current within the Faculty was addressed first. The administration should have focused in improving the smaller elements that will make a student motivated to engage themselves in academic activities. How about prioritizing broken chairs, virus-infected computers, malfunctioning LCDs and air-conditioners, broken toilets and other facilities?
But the real problem lies not on these things, in fact, a bit closer to us; the real problem is the discipline of the AB students themselves.  The problem with most of Artlets is that we feel a bit “liberated” apart from the other colleges in the university.  Vandalism is a serious issue not only because it violates and destoys school property, but it is a complete reflection of how we interact and respect our school environment; this is the real problem.  We are in our age wherein we already have the capability to judge and perceive the things and disambiguate the wrong from the right, including our very actions; vandalism is a complete reflection of “who” we are and how we are probably raised .  It is how we treat the things provided to us by our school that matters, not just by receiving them just because we paid for them, and doing whatever we want with them whenever and wherever.  What we do to these things we express who we are.  “We should be wiser that these things are also for our well-being and that we have no reason to reject this generosity.  I am PRO for the CCTV cameras, but that depends on the discretion of the ones who are administering these surveillance devices; hopefully they won’t violate our privacy!”  Alfredo N. Mendoza V , a student from 2CA3 exclaims
From the academic perspective, it is uncomfortable for most students; one cannot study surrounded by a thought that a certain “big brother” sees his/her every movement and can suddenly call him/her for a “false” or mistaken move made inside the room.  The bottom line is, these things should be taken care of, not broken nor rejected, because probably, one day it will help us in something.  But whatever plan the administration of our college makes, half of the realization of these plans always require the cooperation, discipline and actions of students; a group is always wrong unless the group works together to prove it is correct.  Discipline always comes first, not only that it makes the ‘cooperation’ part of our college administrators, but it also reflects on how we feel and interact with our surroundings.  We must always take care of what others give to us.
Seen from the part of other university offices and administrations, the installation of these CCTVs are an opportunity for future projects of surveillance systems and student protection for other colleges.  Some students feel protected when there is presence of a CCTV camera; though their perception for CCTVs as a protection device is only on that basis.  Magagamit lang yan naman pag may nanakawan sa classroom at hinahanap ang salarin eh; other than that, wala na akong maisip na function para sa mga CCTVs na yan.”  Angelo Palpal-Latoc, a student of 2CA3 says.
I’m actually in favor; it’s a great way of monitoring not only the students but also the Professors... ” wrote Madox Sto. Tomas on CASA’s official Facebook page - Communication Arts Students' Association 2011-2012. Although it is true that the discipline of the students would be easier to monitor this way, it is also true and interesting to think that it is not just the students who are monitored but also the professors as well.  It gives some sort of equality by how the University would weigh in its own employees, specifically its faculty members. Aside from this, is also the fact that it gives additional security as what Reigno Jose Dilao posted: “CCTV cameras can be helpful. You can say na OA ako pero just think about some unwanted events na di lang naman nagaganap sa labas ng room...
Whether what function you think the CCTVs are for, we should always be responsible to take care of these things, we must be wiser to support the resolve of our own University for the welfare of student life instead of clamoring and complaining just because it violates or interferes some of our activities that are probably short-termed compared to what the University has. It may be small, or even controversial, but it still is a step towards a better learning environment. Stella Paras, Cassandra Inay, Yuko Caunis, Alfredo Mendoza

The Student Organizations Coordinating Council (SOCC) conducted the annual fair, Recruitment 101, in which different university wide organizations are promoted. CYBORG Launched, CASAns Choose

Giving highlight to its guilds, the Communication Arts Student’s Association set up camp during the Faculty of Arts and Letter’s annual org fair aptly named “CYBORG” or “Choose Your Best ORG.”
From July eleven to fourteen, AB’s Student Council transformed the Plaza Mayor into a mini-trade fair where all the college-wide organizations were showcased for every Artlet to see and join. Decorated simply with only the society’s official color of red, the CASA booth offered its nine guilds.
“All our planned projects and programs for this academic year are aimed towards bringing out the best in every member of our family, through the support of all nine guilds.” Said Connie Reyes, CASA’s current Public Relation Officer, when asked about how the Executive Board prepared for the event, “As we all know, our guilds highlight the potential of CASAns in various ‘subject’ in our field and show how versatile we are.”
Meanwhile, Ace Quebal and Mark Quitoy, AB SC’s PRO and Treasurer respectively, further expounded why CYBORG was named as such to the event, it was because of the recently concluded quadricentennial celebrations that the SC got the idea of CYBORG. In a way, they said, it was the SC’s idea of ushering in the Faculty into a new generation.

UST Conducts Earthquake Drill

A university-wide earthquake drill was organized last June 30, 2011 at the UST open field. The drill started at ten o’clock in the morning, and scheduled the activity to be repeated at four o’clock for students who have afternoon classes. However, the afternoon assembly was postponed due to heavy rain.
Announcements were made by the dean’s office through the class presidents and the public address system.  The class presidents did a head count so that the drill will not be a way for the students to cut classes after the said activity. Several professors wore neon vests for recognition as they guide the students to their way out of their respective buildings. There were designated areas in the field for each college and students were escorted by their professors as they orderly “save” themselves. Classrooms and college gates were also locked for the safety of everyone’s belongings.
These measures were done so that the students will be aware and properly prepared in case of an earthquake or any other unexpected natural crisis to happen.
